Quality of care refers to the care patients should receive according to current medical best practice and standards of care, as well as the way delivery systems should be organized and funded to ensure that patients receive this care and are satisfied with it. Traditionally, there are nine dimensions of quality: technical performance; access to services; effectiveness of care; efficiency of service delivery; interpersonal relations; continuity of services; safety; physical infrastructure and comfort; and choice. These dimensions have been further modified in different service and program contexts. The Urban Health Initiative strives to improve quality services in Uttar Pradesh across all key aspects – availability of method of choice, information to clients, technical competence, interpersonal relations, mechanisms for encouraging continuity and follow-up, and accessibility and acceptability, particularly for the urban poor. UHI follows three key strategic approaches to improve the quality of family planning services in targeted health facilities:
