Ipas is a nonprofit organization that works internationally to increase women's ability to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights, and to reduce abortion-related deaths and injuries. Ipas believes that women everywhere should have the opportunity to determine their futures, care for their families, and manage their fertility. Ipas India is headquartered in New Delhi with field offices in Pune (Maharashtra), Ranchi (Jharkhand), and Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh). Ipas India combines research, advocacy, and promotion of other abortion technologies to make a positive impact on the health of Indian women.


The Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital (KNMH), a UHI partner in Allahabad, was established in 1941 with the patronage and blessings of Mahatma Gandhi and has been working in the area of maternal and child health for almost 70 years. The primary objective of KNTH is to monitor maternal and child health activities in Allahabad District and to provide state-of-the-art treatment facilities. KNTH provides family planning services as part of integrated maternal and child health services. Services are provided at three levels - in the hospital, in urban slums, and in rural areas. Recognizing the vital importance of improved reproductive health among women and slum communities, and the complex factors that create this situation, UHI will build on the KNTH's experience and expand upon these successful initiatives in Allahabad. Parivar Seva Sanstha(PSS), is one of the reputed National level NGO working in the field of reproductive health for around 35 years. It has its activities in 17 States through social marketing of clinical RH services with emphasis on various family planning methods, social marketing of products, providing education & training, conducting field/operational research and advocacy. The organization has network of 35 clinics spread over 11 States mostly located at districts and cities and caters to both urban and rural populations with focus on low and middle income group of clients. In the State of U.P. the organization has six clinics, out of which five clinics are under UHI project, those are catering primarily to urban poor to increase their acceptance of family planning methods.

PSS volunteers and community executives extend outreach, market services, and draw clients to their clinics especially from designated slums not covered by other UHI NGO partners. PSS will reach to 64,000 MWRA in the allotted slum population in addition to those coming from urban areas. Expanded Services will be offered through Routine and fixed days services, promotion & marketing through mid-media and linkages with UHI partners. The PSS model has potential to have increased number of family planning acceptors amongst urban & rural poor, if the basket of contraceptive can be increased. Download Scope of Work


Janani, a registered non-profit society with FCRA, is an affiliate of DKT International which is based in Washington D.C. DKT International has 16 programs across 17 countries being one of the largest and most cost-efficient social marketing organizations in the world. Janani has been operating the social marketing and social franchising program in Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh since 1996. In 2011, Janani has expanded its operations in 11 cities of Uttar Pradesh in partnership with Family Health International (FHI) under the Urban Health Initiative.

Janani has 37 Surya Family Planning Clinics across Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh that provide the entire range of Family Planning services both for spacing and limiting. The operational model of Janani also involves a network of 105 private sector doctors as fractional franchisees to support the Family Planning service delivery. Outreach Family Planning Services and camps are organized periodically at Government Facilities across Bihar and Jharkhand to strengthen service delivery at the Primary Health Centers (PHCs) and District Hospitals. Janani has a large network of rural medical practitioners known as Surya Health Promoters (SHPs) that are provided specialized training on Family Planning and comprehensive abortion care to enable them to counsel couples with unmet need. In 2011, another layer of coordinators at the block level were created to bring all the SHPs of one block under one umbrella to coordinate and streamline their functioning These coordinators are called Surya Suvidha Kendra (SSK) representatives. Chemists that have valid drug licenses are chosen as SSKs.

The social marketing component of Janani involves the marketing of the Surya Range of Contraceptive Products at subsidized prices. The social marketing infrastructure of shops and stockists serves as a channel to sell products in rural, urban, and semi-urban areas and to replenish supplies at the SHPs.

Ever since its inception in 1995, Janani till December 2010 has sold over 46 million condoms, 74 lakh oral contraceptive pills, 732,881 emergency contraceptive pills, 76,986 intrauterine devices and 200,904 injectables through its distribution networks.

In 2010 alone, Janani sold over 30 million condoms, 25 lakh oral contraceptive pills, 436,000 emergency contraceptive pills, 43,000 intrauterine devices and 148,000 injectables through its distribution networks.

District Women’s Hospital, Agra is a public facility headed by Dr. Jyoti Kanishkar. This public facility has been created to provide maternity, reproductive and gyanecological services to women. Its associated with UHI since July 2010 and provides all services such as sterlisation, IUCD, pills and condoms. This is an exceptional female district hospital as it also provides facility of Non-surgical vasectomy to males once a month under UHI project.

District Hospital, Agra is headed by Dr. A. K. Asthana. A multispeciality public facility, it provides Male Sterlisation services in the project since Oct. 2010.

Sarojini Naidu Medical College, also known as S.N. Medical College, is one of the oldest medical colleges in India. The S. N. Medical College & Hospital, Agra provides tertiary level specialized health care services not only to people of urban and rural areas from Agra but also to the patients approaching from surrounding states. Under UHI project, it offers Service Delivery day once a month. Under the project it provides Sterlisations and IUCD insertions.

Agra Hospital is headed by Dr. R N Goel. It is a maternity and immunisation centre with 17 beds and is member of Sathiya network. It is furnished with operation theatre, labour room. It holds a service delivery day every Thursday of the week and providesall facilities such as sterlisation, DMPA and IUCD to females. UHI supports the facility by placing counsellors.

Navdeep Hospital – Navdeep Hospital is managed by Dr. Anupama Sharma who is a Gyanecologist. This is a maternity centre. With 24 beds, it provides maternity and gyanecological services to women. It is part of Sathiya network. Its engaged with UHI since Nov. 2010 and provides all facilities to women on every Thursday of the month.

S R Medical Institute and Research Centre (SRMIRC) – SRMIRC is headed by Dr. Sudha Bansal. This is a multispeciality hospital providing health services. It also provides telemedicine services to patients. It has multiple operation theatres catering to different disciplines such as General Surgery, Surgical deliveries, sterlisations etc. The facility is engaged with UHI since May 2011 and provides services every Thursday.

Bansal Nursing Home is headed by Dr. Sudha Bansal and is a sister institute of SRMIRC. There is no financial support to the facility under the project, but it services the clients referred to it by UHI Staff and associates.

Urban Health Centre ( Chini ka Roza, tedi Bagia and Loha Mandi) – These are public facilities and serve a catchment of slums. These are headed by Medical officer, a qualified medical practiioner, and provides IUCD services .

Mohal lal Gautam District Women’s Hospital is a public facility setup to provide healthcare services to women in the district. The facility primarily provides Gyanecological and maternity services. It has 5 doctors out of whom 4 are specialists. It supports UHI project by providing all services to women but for DMPA. UHI has also placed to two doctors in the facility.
Malkahn Singh District Hospital is a public sector facility, headed by Dr. Bal Kishun , it provides services in multiple disciplines to people of Aligarh district. It supports UHI project by conducting NSVs.

Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College – Headed by Dr. Noor-afsha Sabzposh, this is a multi-disciplinary public medical college. The department of Gyanecology has 150 beds and 12 faculty members. The facility provides all services under the project but for DMPA

Rathi Hospital s headed by Dr. Asha Rathi. Situated in South of city, it has 19 beds and facilties such as X Ray, Pathology Lab, Ultra-sound, Operation theatre and Labour room. The husband of Dr. Rathi is paedtrician and the facility provides maternal and new born care. Under the project it is also providing family planning services such as sterlisation, DMPA, MTP and IUCD insertions.

Hira Lal Hospital is headed by Dr. Sudha Varshney. This is a 20 bed private facility equipped with operation theatre, pathology lab, X Ray and Ultra-sound machine. It provides IUCD and DMPA services under UHI project.

Prem Chandra Hospital : headed by Dr. Rashmi Agarwal, this 15 bed facility is situated in the heart of the city. It has facilities such as operation theatre, pathology lab., ultrasound. It’s a maternity clinic and provides IUCD and DMPA.

Makhan Lal Hospital Owned by Dr. Anju Gupta and her paedtrician husband, this facility provides maternal and new born care. Engaged with UHI project since Dec 15, 2010, it provides DMPA and IUCD services.

Sumbul Hospital, Zamalpur : Headed by Dr. Sumbul Khan, this is a 15 bed hospital situated in north of the city. It has operation theatre, pathology lab and ultrasound. The facility has started providing IUCD and DMPA services under the project since June 2011.

The District Women Hospital, Allahabad is headed by Dr. Nurus Hasan. Dr. Nurus is an active member of FOGSI and a well known Obstetrician Gynocologist. She is in charge of the Post Partum Program. The District Women Hospital provides a full range of services including delivery, MTP, female sterilization, IUCD. This hospital also provides hysterectomy services; the Government supplies of OCPs (Mala-N) and Condoms (Nirodh) are provided to the beneficiaries. It has 500 beds in general and emergency ward together. Since April 2010, the District Women hospital has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days and routine family planning services

The Swaroop Rani Nehru Memorial Hospital, Allahabad provides a range of family planning services. The Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology is headed by Dr. Ragni Malhotra, who is an active member of FOGSI. They provide delivery, MTP, female sterilization, IUCD, hysterectomy and NSV services. Dr. Dilip Chaurasia, Dept. of Urology is also an active member of IMA, Allahabad, who collaborates with UHI and provide required services. Since December 2010 Swaroop Rani Nehru Memorial Hospital as been collaborating with UHI to implement NSV drives and the routine family planning services. The Government supplies of OCPs (Mala-N) and Condoms (Nirodh) are provided to the couples here.

Khorabar urban PHC is headed by Dr. Jitrendra Pal, Medical Officer in Charge) and has 1 Medical Officer (Male) and 1 Female Medical Officer (Contract with NRHM) are also posted there. This PHC provides services like delivery, MTP, Female & Male sterilization, IUCD, OCP, Condom and other RCH services Immunization, Polio etc. Each year PHC provides reproductive health and family planning services to more than 3000 peoples. This includes inpatient, outpatient services and field level activities. Since May 2010 the PHC has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days, in addition to the ongoing routine services which they provide. This PHC is attached with urban area and approximates 2 KM far from our slums and serving around 35 slum communities. Every Friday is decided for the Fixed Service day. Dr. Pal has a soft spoken and provides full contribution to the UHI program.

Chargawa urban is headed by Dr. A. K. Singh – MOIC and this PHC has1 Medical Officer (Male) and 1 Female Medical Officer (Contract with NRHM) also posted there. People are also availing the OPD, Medicines, IUCD, Immunization, ANC/ PNC, delivery services with the National Program like Pulse Polio etc. Each year PHC provides reproductive health and family planning services to more than 3500 peoples. This includes inpatient, outpatient services and field level activities. Since May 2010 the PHC has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days, in addition to the ongoing routine services which they provide. This PHC attached with urban area and approximate 2- 4 KM far from our slums. Dr. AK Singh is very supportive and available on each service day to supervise the service day. Every Friday is decided for the Fixed Service day and Dr. Singh has a soft spoken and fully devoted to UHI program.

PPC of BRD Medical College is headed by Dr. Neela Rai Sharma, HOD, Obs. and Gyne while main responsibility is under the CMO. The PPC has 2 Female doctors (Dr. Neena and Dr. Meera) are posted. Earlier this PP center is being provided regular immunization services; OCP & Condom to the community but other services like IUCD was not taking care by the center. Initiative taken by UHI city team and negotiation with CMO & HOD of Gyne department (BRD Medical College); PPC start provided the IUCD services from Jun’11. Each year PPC provides reproductive health and family planning services (OCP and Condoms) to more than 1000 peoples. This includes field level activities also. The HOD has provided a standby Operation Theater and UHI team has developed as OT Finally 10th June’2011 is the day of IUCD which now open for the community and this PP center saturating around 24 slums of two partners (MSS & GSS). The HOD madam has also allowed us for injecting the DMPA at the same. Now every Friday is organizing as Fixed Service Delivery Day and clients are being serve on that day (IUCD, Condoms and OCPs).

Zafra bazaar Health Post is headed by Dr. Archna Gupta as a MO under NRHM support. Every Friday is organizing the “SISHU AVM MATRITVA SWASTHAYA DIWAS”. On the Friday the PEs/ USHA accompanied the willingness clients for IUCD, Condoms and OCPs. This health post providing services daily and IUCD & RCH services is being provided. This health post is in urban area of city. Each year Health Post provides reproductive health and family planning services to more than 1500 peoples. This includes outpatient services and field level activities. Since May 2010 the Health Post has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days, in addition to the ongoing routine services which they provide. Dr. Gupta is soft spoken & well aware about UHI activities & provides all support.

Gorakhnath Health Post is headed by Dr. Renu Verma as a Medical officer and this is NRHM supported health post. Every Friday is celebrating/ organizing the “SISHU AVM MATRITVA SWASTHAYA DIWAS”. On the Friday the PEs/ USHA accompanied the willingness clients for IUCD, Condoms and OCPs. Each year Health Post provides reproductive health and family planning services to more than 1300 peoples. This includes outpatient services and field level activities. Since May 2010 the Health Post has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days, in addition to the ongoing routine services which they provide. Dr. Verma is very supportive and her contribution to UHI activities is nice.

Dogra Nursing Home is headed by Dr. Niti Dogra. Dr. Niti Dogra is an active member of FOGSI and a well Obstetrician Gynocologist in Gorakhpur. Dogra Nursing Home provides a full range of services including delivery, MTP, Female Sterilization, IUCD, DMPA, as well as other reproductive and gynecological services including OPD, minor operations etc. Each year Dogra Nursing Home provides reproductive health and family planning services to approximately 1300 people (inpatient & outpatient services). Since December 2010 hospital has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days (every Monday). Dr. Niti is soft spoken, humble & contributes to UHI program.

Jevan Jyoti Hospital is headed by Dr. Sadhna Gupta. Dr. Sadhna Gupta is an active member of FOGSI and a well Obstetrician Gynocologist in Gorakhpur. She was also Ex. President of FOGSI. Jevan Jyoti Hospital provides a full range of services including delivery, MTP, Female Sterilization, IUCD, DMPA, as well as other reproductive and gynecological services including OPD, minor operations etc. Each year JJ Hospital provides reproductive health and family planning services to approximately 2300 people (inpatient & outpatient services). Since December 2010 hospital has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days (every Thursday), in addition to the ongoing routine services which they provide. Dr. Sadhna is soft spoken and well devoted to UHI program and poor/ marginalized women.

Mary Gold Hospital is headed by Dr. Upma Jaiswal. Dr. Jaiswal is an active member of FOGSI and a well Obstetrician Gynocologist in Gorakhpur. Mary Gold Hospital provides a full range of services including delivery, MTP, Female Sterilization, IUCD, DMPA, as well as other reproductive and gynecological services including OPD, minor operations etc. Each year Hospital provides reproductive health and family planning services to approximately 2500 people (inpatient & outpatient services). Since December 2010 hospital has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days on every Thursday.

District Woman Hospital, Varanasi-DWH is one of the oldest Government Hospitals of Varanasi. It is situated in the heart of the city. It has been serving the ancient temple city as well as the surrounding regions under the able guidance of Dr VIDYAWATI, SIC who is an esteemed gynaecologist of the city. She is a pioneer in the field of lap ligation & one of them to follow it in public sector She has done thousands of ligations till date. The hospital is cater facility of indoor 11048 and outdoor 54846 patients per year. It is 180-bed’s hospital with both indoor & outdoor facilities. It is a tertiary level hospital and all types of cases are referred here .It is dealing in both Obst & Gynae. Emergencies like obstructed labour PPH breech transverse cord prolapse perforation of uterus etc. Facility for emergency LSCS is available. Cases of lap ligation are refer here from all over the district .Immunisation facility is also available. A consoler for HIV cases is posted who is counselling to HIV patient. UHI has celebrated first SDD on 24th March’11 and since 24th March’11, SDD is ongoing in every 3rd Friday of the month and beneficiaries are taking family planning services as routine basis too.

District Women Hospital, Mathura is headed by Dr. Shyama Murthy, Chief Medical Superintendent. She is also active member of FOGSI and a well known Obstetrician & Gynecologist in Mathura. District Women Hospital, Mathura provides a full range of services including female sterilization - Lap & Minilap, male sterilization, IUCD, MTP and all types of delivery i.e. Normal, breech, caesarean, as well as other reproductive and gynecological services including removal of retention of placenta, obstructed labor management, Antenatal care, post natal care, FP counseling and RTI/STI management. Each year District Women Hospital, Mathura provides reproductive health and family planning services to approximately 48000 people. This includes both inpatient and outpatient services. Since April 2011, District Women Hospital, Mathura has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days on weekly basis, in addition to the ongoing routine services which they provide.

District Male Hospital, Mathura named after Maharishi Dayananda Saraswati Chikitsalaya is headed by Dr. Nepal Singh, Chief Medical Superintendent. He is an active member of IMA and a well known Surgery Specialist in Mathura. District Male Hospital provides a range of services including Male sterilization (NSV), Condom supply, and male counseling on family planning importance. Each year District Male Hospital provides health family planning services to approximately 120 male. Since July 2011 District Male Hospital has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days, in addition to the ongoing routine services which hospital provides.

Urban Family Welfare Centre, Krishna Nagar, Mathura is headed by Dr. Rachna Gupta (DGO), Medical Officer. Dr. Rachna Gupta also part of female sterilization camp team and provide service to whole Mathura district during family planning camps. Urban Family Welfare Centre, Krishna Nagar provides a range of services including IUCD insertion, OCP and Condom and ANC, PNC and vaccination. Each year Urban Family Welfare Centre, Krishna Nagar provides reproductive health and family planning services to approximately 360 people. Only outpatient services are available at this centre. Since July 2011 Urban Family Welfare Centre, Krishna Nagar has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days, in addition to the ongoing routine services which they provide. This centre also provides outreach services for immunization and most of the slums are in its vicinity.

PPC, Mathura is located in District Women Hospital Boundary and headed by Dr. Geeta Chandra. She is an active member of FOGSI and a well known Obstetrician& Gynecologist in Mathura. She also performs female sterilization in DWH. PPC, Mathura provides a range of services including IUCD. Each year PPC, Mathura provides ICDD services to approximately 300 people. Since April 2011 PPC Centre, Mathura has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days, in addition to the ongoing routine services which centre provides.

Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital,Farrukhabad is headed by Dr.Suman Singh-CMS (Female). Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Farrukhabad provides a full range of services including delivery, MTP, female sterilization, male sterilization, IUCD, as well as other reproductive and gynecological services including treatment of STI,RTI,APH, PPH and Eclampsia. Each year Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital,Farrukhabad provides reproductive health and family planning services to approximately 30000-35000 people. This includes both inpatient and outpatient services. Since April,2011, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Farrukhabad has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days, in addition to the ongoing routine services which they provide. It is because of Dr Suman’s interest and effort UHI with its partner NGO-SWI is able to organize fix service delivery day in a very smooth manner.

Memorial Mission Hospital, Farrukhabad is headed by Dr. N. P. Kujur. Dr. Mrs. P. Kujur is a well known Obstetrician Gynecologist working with Memorial Mission Hospital in Farrukhabad. Memorial Mission Hospital provides a full range of services including delivery, female sterilization, male sterilization, IUCD, DMPA, as well as other reproductive and gynecological services. Each year Mission Hospital provides reproductive health and family planning services to approximately 3000- 4000 people. This includes both inpatient and outpatient services. Since June 2011, Mission Hospital has been collaborating with UHI to implement fixed days for injectable. This is the oldest hospital in delivering health care services in this area established in 1914 with the vision of caring women and children and later on because of the need of male patients this facility started providing services to male clients in 1916. This hospital was established by Presbyterian Church USA in 1914.
